Fish, chips and coach trips: Our coastal tour of Britain

Fish, chips and coach trips: Our coastal tour of Britain

We’re National Express. We move the people. And sometimes, those people want to be moved to the sea for one specific reason: fish and chips.

Yes, the holy grail of British cuisine crispy, golden, aggressively vinegary, and best eaten while fending off a rogue seagull or two. But instead of battling traffic and expensive parking just to get your greasy fingers on some seaside cod, we’ve got a better idea: get on the coach.

We’ll take you straight to the best coastal chip shops in Britain. No stress. No “sat nav says turn left” arguments. Just you, a window seat, and the promise of deep-fried joy at the other end.

1. Whitby, North Yorkshire

The vibe: Moody cliffs. Historic charm. Fish so fresh it probably had plans for the afternoon.

Your chippy: The Magpie Café. Yes, it’s the one everyone talks about. No, the queue doesn’t move faster just because you ask.

How we get you there: Direct routes via Leeds and York. You relax; we’ll climb the hills.

2. Brighton, East Sussex

The vibe: Pebbles, seagulls, questionable tattoos, and good times.

Your chippy: Bardsley’s of Baker Street, family-run since the 1920s, this place is a little inland (translation: fewer seagulls, lower prices) but still delivers proper fish and chips that hit the spot. You get golden batter, generous portions, and change from a tenner. Practically unheard of in Brighton.

How we get you there: Direct coaches from London, Birmingham and more. It’s cheaper than the train, and you don’t have to pretend to enjoy standing for two hours.

3. Padstow, Cornwall

Fish and Chips Day Padstow

The vibe: Cornish fishing town turned celebrity chef haven.

Your chippy: Stein’s Fish & Chips. Yes, that Stein. Big on flavour, short on fuss. Eat them on the harbour wall like a local. A very full, very smug local.

How we get you there: We’ll drop you in Bodmin or Wadebridge — a scenic detour from the rat race. Then it’s a short hop to Padstow. Or a scenic stomp, if you're feeling outdoorsy.

4. Scarborough, North Yorkshire

The vibe: Old-school British seaside with a side of Victorian drama.

Your chippy: Papa’s Fish & Chips – massive portions, crisp batter, and the warm glow of knowing you’ve found one of the UK’s finest.

How we get you there: Coaches from Leeds, Manchester and Sheffield. Just enough time onboard to build up an appetite (and maybe sneak in a nap).

5. Bournemouth, Dorset

The vibe: Seven miles of sandy beach. Basically the British Riviera, but with more ice cream vans.

Your chippy: Chez Fred. Slightly fancy, completely delicious. The peas are mushy, but the vibe is crisp.

How we get you there: London, Bristol, Midlands – we’ll get you there without breaking a sweat or a bank account.

Why Us? (Besides the obvious charm)

Let’s be honest: driving to the coast sounds fun until you’re circling a car park for 25 minutes and paying £14 to leave it next to a bin.

When you travel with us, you get:

  • Zero parking stress

  • Roomy seats and no “are we there yet?” from the driver’s seat

  • Wi-Fi, chargers and air con that actually works

  • Fares so good you can justify the large chips and curry sauce

We’re the calm before the crisp. The road trip without the road rage. The official enabler of Britain’s battered cravings.

So, shall we?
Grab your coat, your appetite, and maybe a lemon wedge. We’ll handle the rest.
